How to Book Tickets with a Foreign Passport
The official app is 12306 (available in English) or Railway 12306 on iOS/Android. Create an account, add each traveler with passport details, then pay with a foreign card or via Alipay/WeChat Pay. Alternative: booking sites like Trip.com sell the same tickets with an English interface and a small fee — easiest if 12306's verification gives you trouble.
First Class or Second Class?
Second class (二等座): 3+2 seating, plenty of legroom, fine for trips under 3 hours. First class (一等座): 2+2 seating, wider seats, quieter car — worth it for the long hauls. Business class on 'Fuxing' trains offers lie-flat seats but is pricey. All classes have air conditioning, charging ports (under the armrests or seat front) and clean washrooms.
Station Navigation for First-Timers
Arrive 45–60 minutes early. Follow signs to the waiting hall (候车室), find your gate number on the big board (it is shown on your ticket and updates ~20 minutes before departure), and queue at the gate with passport + ticket. Boarding is fast; luggage racks are above the seats and at carriage ends. Announcements are bilingual on major routes.
