Week by Week: Where the Color Is
Here's exactly where the peak is happening, week by week, and which trips you can still book today.
Now – Early October: Kanas, Xinjiang (Peak right now)
If we had to pick one place on earth in late September, it might be this. Birch and poplar forests turn pure gold around Kanas Lake, set against snow-dusted peaks and mirror-still water. The season is brutally short — roughly September 20 to October 10 — which is exactly why most travelers never see it.
Can you still go? Last-minute seats exist but move fast. For most travelers, Kanas is a plan-ahead-for-next-year trip — and September is when next year's best guides and lodges get reserved.
Early–Mid October: Ejina, Inner Mongolia
One of the world's great poplar forests — 38,000 hectares of desert poplars flaming gold along the Ejina River. Peak is roughly October 5–20, and it's paired beautifully with nearby desert scenery most foreigners have never heard of.
Can you still go? This one is genuinely bookable right now — early-to-mid October departures are still within our custom-planning window.
Mid October – Early November: Jiuzhaigou Valley
Turquoise lakes framed by forests that shift from gold to deep red — Jiuzhaigou in mid-autumn is the single most-photographed landscape in China for a reason. Peak: roughly October 15 to November 5.
Can you still go? Yes — this is the sweet spot. Book this week and you can walk the valley at peak color.
Mid October – Early November: Beijing
You haven't seen Beijing until you've seen the Great Wall threading through red hillsides. Urban color peaks at Xiangshan (Fragrant Hills) in late October, while Mutianyu's sections turn a week or two earlier. Our 4-day Beijing itinerary is built around exactly this window.
Can you still go? Easily — Beijing is our most flexible destination, and a 3–5 day trip can be arranged in days, not weeks.
November: Guilin & Yangshuo
South of the Nanling Mountains, autumn arrives late and gently. November brings golden light on the Li River, rice terraces in harvest gold around Longji, and the best cycling weather of the year in Yangshuo — with summer's humidity gone. See our Guilin & Li River itinerary.
Can you still go? November is one of the most underrated months in southern China. Plenty of time to plan properly.
What About Winter? Honestly, Don't Sleep on It
Here's the secret the foliage photos don't tell you: everything above is still busy by Chinese standards. If you want China's iconic sights with half the people and 20–40% lower hotel prices, look at December.
And December has one thing no other month does: Harbin. The Ice & Snow World — a city-block-sized park of illuminated ice castles, rebuilt every winter — typically opens in late December, timed almost impossibly well for Christmas and New Year trips. Add Siberian tigers, Russian-influenced architecture, and hotpot that actually makes sense in −20°C, and you have one of Asia's great winter experiences.
Our 4-day Ice & Snow Fantasy itinerary is built for exactly this window.
